THE SHORT VERSION
- Choose the individual launch, not only the destination.
- Seasonal wind is a planning clue, never a forecast.
- Confirm instruction, local access and rescue before booking.
Start with the session you want
A beautiful beach can be a bad place for your next session. The useful question is simple: does the launch work for your ability, on your dates, with the support you need?
This is our starting collection, with three destination guides and a detailed Sotavento spot guide. Each destination contains several riding areas. Choose the region for the holiday, then check the individual launch for the session.
Compare the first destinations
| Destination | Start here if you want | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Dakhla | A trip built around lagoon lessons or progression | Your exact base, launch direction, rescue zone and transport |
| Fuerteventura | A choice between northern beach life and a southern kite-focused stay | North versus south, exposed rocks at some beaches, and lagoon availability |
| Mauritius | Lagoon riding within a broader island holiday | Your school location, transport and the boundary between lagoon and expert reef riding |
| Sotavento | A closer look at southern Fuerteventura’s lagoon and ocean | Dated lagoon timetable, gusts, lesson zones and rescue arrangements |
These are useful options to compare. They are not a ranking, and none guarantees wind.
Choose for your current ability
For a first course, compare the teaching arrangements before the hotel photos. Ask about the number of students sharing a kite, time actually spent handling it, instructor language and what happens when the conditions do not suit the lesson. A shallow lagoon still needs an instructor, a suitable wind direction and enough space.
If you can waterstart but cannot consistently return upwind, explain that clearly when booking. You may need supervised practice, a suitable downwind recovery area and support that a standard equipment rental does not include. Our lesson guide helps you ask the useful questions.
Independent riders should check the launch, landing, local traffic, self-rescue options and where a failed session ends. A rescue boat somewhere on the beach does not establish that you are covered. Wave riders and foilers have further depth, swell and reef questions that a general destination label cannot answer.
Use the season to shortlist, then read the forecast
Seasonal patterns help decide when to travel. They cannot tell you which kite to rig next Tuesday. Dakhla operators describe wind throughout the year, with stronger periods in the warmer months. Fuerteventura’s trade-wind season attracts summer riders. Le Morne generally has stronger trades during the austral winter, with local operators recommending periods extending into November.
Those descriptions cover broad tendencies and different businesses use different definitions of a good day. A beginner, a heavy rider and a foil racer will not count the same conditions as rideable.
Before committing to a session, compare the forecast with actual local wind, gusts, tide and weather. Ask the local school how the forecast translates at that launch. Terrain can make an offshore forecast feel very different on the beach.
Check the whole trip
Accommodation beside a kite beach can save daily transport, but confirm which beach it faces and where lessons actually happen. A resort’s wave spot and its beginner lagoon may be separate. Ask who gets a shuttle, when it operates and whether equipment travels with you.
Build a total budget with lessons or rental, storage, rescue, transfers, food and equipment baggage. Check the current airline rules for your actual ticket before paying for transport. Keep a no-wind plan that you would still enjoy: a good trip needs more than a hopeful forecast.
If friends or family are coming, check where they can spend a comfortable day while you ride. A windy beach is not automatically a pleasant swimming beach. Distance to shops, shade and transport matters more after several days than it does in a photograph.
Before you book
- Name the specific launch and the school meeting point.
- Describe your level through skills you can perform reliably.
- Get the lesson, rental and rescue inclusions in writing.
- Check tide-dependent availability for your dates.
- Ask about weather cancellation, refunds and equipment damage terms.
- Confirm local access rules and riding zones again on arrival.
Start with Dakhla, compare Fuerteventura, or plan a mixed holiday around Mauritius.
