THE SHORT VERSION
- The tidal lagoon is not continuously full.
- Lesson access is regulated by the local concession.
- Ocean riding requires a separate conditions and rescue decision.
Check the lagoon before booking for the lagoon
Sotavento’s tidal lagoon is the attraction in many photos of southern Fuerteventura. It is also the detail most likely to be misunderstood. The lagoon does not remain full and usable throughout every day or every week.
Start with the René Egli lagoon timetable for your travel year. Then ask the centre which sessions and lesson areas are realistic on your dates. A general high-tide time alone does not establish the water depth your activity needs.
Lagoon and ocean: two decisions
| Tidal lagoon | Ocean side | |
|---|---|---|
| Main attraction | Shallow water when the lagoon fills | More open riding space and different conditions |
| Main constraint | Water level and usable teaching periods | Wind direction, gusts and recovery consequences |
| Beginner approach | Organized instruction in an assessed zone | A separate school decision, not an automatic alternative |
| What to confirm | Timetable, depth, lesson access and current zones | Skill requirements, rescue coverage and where a failed session ends |
Flat water can still have gusts, traffic and insufficient depth. The ocean can have an offshore wind component. Neither should be treated as a self-teaching shortcut.
Understand the tide information
René Egli describes the lagoon as a tidal area over four kilometres long and up to 200 metres wide, with filling associated with full and new moon phases. Those dimensions describe the lagoon’s extent, not a permanently rideable area.
The operator publishes estimated lagoon times and highest levels for the year. Check that the year matches your trip. Ask how the estimate translates into your lesson location and how the centre handles days when the usable period is short or conditions do not cooperate.
Water changes within the session. Do not assume the launch and return will look the same. Follow current staff guidance and stop before a falling depth creates a problem. Different equipment needs different clearance, so a depth mentioned for windsurfing is not automatically a kiteboarding rule.
Lessons and riding zones
René Egli states that it holds the exclusive licence for lessons throughout the lagoon. Confirm teaching with the authorized provider and respect the current designated zones. That statement concerns instruction; it should not be read as a complete explanation of all independent access rights.
Ask about group size, kite sharing, actual handling time and the conditions in which the school will postpone or move a session. For a novice, the useful question is what the teaching plan looks like over your week, not whether the marketing calls the lagoon suitable for beginners.
If you are already independent, explain your skills and ask where you can ride within current rules. Do not launch just because someone else is already on the water.
Wind and rescue
Fuerteventura’s trade winds can become strong, and terrain affects how the wind arrives at the beach. Look at gusts and direction as well as the average. Get local advice about what the forecast means at Sotavento.
Before ocean riding, get clear answers about rescue. Who is included? Which zone is covered? During what hours? Is there a charge or recovery limit? Does the service include your own equipment? A staffed centre does not establish unlimited cover for every visitor.
A windsurfing service page can describe rescue facilities without answering the exact terms for a kite rental. Confirm your particular package. If the wind or support does not fit your ability, choose a different session plan.
Plan the day around the actual session
Stay near your teaching base if you want to minimize daily logistics, or confirm transport from Costa Calma and other accommodation areas. Check equipment storage and how far you must carry it when the waterline moves.
Bring sun protection, drinking water and a layer for time on the windy beach. Ask the school what it supplies and what thermal protection it recommends for your dates. Avoid choosing kite sizes from a generic travel packing list.
If a non-riding partner is coming, compare shade, food, transport and sheltered activities. A beach famous for strong wind is not automatically the easiest place to relax for several hours.
Before entering the water
- Read the current signs and confirm your permitted riding or teaching area.
- Check observed wind, gusts and direction with local staff.
- Understand the tide trend and when your session must finish.
- Confirm launch help and the rescue arrangements that apply to you.
- Leave room for other beach and water users.
Use the broader Fuerteventura guide to decide between a northern or southern base. Start with lessons if the goal is your first course.
